Among the nation’s school principals, nearly eight in 10 remained in their post during the 2012-13 school year, according to new federal survey data, though rural principals and those working in secondary schools were more likely to leave than others.
The survey, released by the National Center for Education Statistics last month, is an update of a 2011-12 study based on reports by 7,500 public schools and 1,700 private schools. Of the 114,330 private and public school principals working during the 2011-2012 school year, 78 percent stayed at the same school the following year, 6 percent went to a different school, and 12 percent left the principalship altogether.
