Childhood Body-Mass Index and the Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in Adulthood
Being overweight as a child increases a person’s chance of suffering from heart disease as an adult, concludes a study by a team of researchers at the Institute of Preventative Medicine, a health research organization in Copenhagen, Denmark. The report also found that children who were overweight, but then lost weight while still young and remained healthy, reduced their risk of heart disease.
The data for the report included height and weight statistics gathered from more than 276,000 children ages 7 to 13 between 1955 and 1960. Researchers then examined hospital records for instances of coronary heart disease among that group between 1977 and 2001.
