The What Works Clearinghouse has released a new practice guide to help teachers address students’ proficiency in reading in grades 4-12.

The 65-page handbook includes recommendations from a panel of prominent reading researchers, based on a review of relevant research, for improving students’ comprehension and their interest in reading, as well as helping those who struggle with reading tasks.

The panel urges explicit teaching of vocabulary and comprehension skills, as well as extended discussion of texts and intervention programs that target the individual needs of struggling readers.

Part of the Institute for Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education, the clearinghouse has issued five practice guides in all, which are intended to provide practical strategies for instructional tasks and challenges in the classroom.
