Honors and Awards
The U.S. Department of Education announced the winners of the 1999-2000 National Blue Ribbon Schools awards last week. The awards recognize schools nationwide that have shown outstanding qualities, such as high student achievement and high rates of parental involvement.The program alternates the level of school honored; this year, secondary schools were honored, and next year elementary schools will be recognized. PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING
This year's winners of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching were announced last week. The awards, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, recognize an elementary mathematics, elementary science, secondary mathematics, and secondary science teacher from each state and U.S. jurisdictions.
The honor includes a $7,500 National Science Foundation grant to each awardee to help improve math and science programs at his or her school. The recipients are listed below by state.
