Beatrice Guyton, a former teacher in southwest Ohio’s Shawnee school district who died two years ago, has left $1.2 million to the district to provide college scholarships for its students.
The gift, presented this month by Ms. Guyton’s estate, will be used to furnish at least $20,000 a year in scholarships for high school seniors in the 2,600-student district. The gift stipulates that the money must be given to graduating seniors who plan to continue their educations. The scholarships will range from $500 to $1,000 each.
Ms. Guyton began teaching social studies at Shawnee High School in 1928. She taught for 39 years and retired in 1967. Ms. Guyton was 82 when she died in 1994 of Alzheimer’s disease. The high school has renamed its library the Guyton Information Center in her honor.
Teach for America has announced the election of Sue Lehmann to the position of chairwoman of the board of directors. Ms. Lehmann, a corporate consultant, was part of the team that designed President Clinton’s national-service program, AmeriCorps.
The New York City-based Teach for America, a member of the AmeriCorps program, is a nonprofit organization that recruits recent college graduates who agree to teach for two years in urban or rural schools.
Ms. Lehmann’s appointment to the newly created position is one of the steps taken to ensure that the organization makes a successful transition from start-up to long-standing institution, Teach for America officials said.
The program, which began in 1989, has placed more than 3,000 graduates in schools across the country. In her new role, Ms. Lehmann will work to expand the membership of the five-member board to include individuals who can link the organization with opportunities in both the public and private sectors, and provide general advice and guidance.
