John R. Kernodle Jr., the school board chairman of the Guilford County, N.C., district, was struck and killed by a car while crossing a downtown street in Atlanta Oct. 26. He was in the city for a National School Boards Association meeting.
Mr. Kernodle, 50, had served as the interim chairman of the school board for two years, overseeing the merger of the districts of High Point, Greensboro, and Guilford County.
