All three school board candidates who had the support of the Christian Coalition were beaten this month in a runoff election for spots on the G.O.P. ticket in Lake County, Fla.
Moderate Republicans soundly defeated the trio in a race that had boiled down to a choice between moderates and conservatives.
During the past two years, the school board majority, which is made up of conservative Christians, made international headlines when it adopted a policy requiring schools to teach that U.S. culture is superior to all others. (See Education Week, May 25, 1994.)
The general election is next month.
