Legislative Action

Health-Care Reform
HR 3600
In the first Congressional vote on health-care reform, the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Health voted 6 to 5 last week to approve its own alternative to President Clinton’s plan; the measure now goes to the full committee.

Precollegiate Programs
The Senate Subcommittee on Education, Arts, and Humanities continued hearings last week on reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, focusing on professional development.

National Science Foundation
The Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee held a hearing last week on reauthorization of the National Science Foundation, focusing on the value of supporting basic research versus support for math- and science-education programs.

School-Lunch Program
The House Subcommittee on Elementary, Secondary, and Vocational Education continued hearings last week on the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, focusing on the nutritional content of school meals.
