Gov. Terry E. Branstad of Iowa has been elected to the board of directors of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
At its quarterly meeting last month, the board also elected Josephine Bennett, a teacher of secondary-school biology in Memphis; Lois Jean Turner, a teacher at Stix Investigative Learning Center in St. Louis; Alma Garcia Vining, an elementary-school teacher at the P.A. A synthesis of a decade of research in the field of teacher education forms the basis for a new book scheduled for release early next year by the Association of Teacher Educators.
The book is the culmination of a three-year effort by the group, which includes approximately 5,000 educators involved in the training and professional development of teachers.
The 1,100-page Handbook of Research on Teacher Education will include original articles in 48 different research areas.
The book is “something positive” in a field too often characterized by criticism of its shortcomings, said John Sikula, dean of the college of education at California State University.
Mr. Sikula is an associate editor of the project, along with Martin Haberman, professor of education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The editor is W. Robert Houston, associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Houston’s college of education.
Expected to sell for $65, the book is slated for release in February by Macmillan Publishing Company following ate’s annual meeting in Las Vegas.
