The schools in a troubled Texas district will shut down, and the district’s 2,700 students will attend schools in the neighboring Dallas school district.

The state-appointed board managing the Wilmer-Hutchins district approved the arrangement July 28, three days after the Dallas school board agreed to enroll Wilmer-Hutchins students for the 2005-06 school year.

Texas Commissioner of Education Shirley Neeley appointed the seven-member board to run the Wilmer-Hutchins system in the wake of allegations of academic cheating and financial improprieties. (“Texas Chief Ousts Troubled District’s Elected Board,” May 18, 2005) The Wilmer-Hutchins students will attend 25 schools in the 163,000-student Dallas district, said Sandra Guerrero, a spokeswoman for the Dallas district.

The Dallas and Wilmer-Hutchins boards will re-evaluate the arrangement at the end of the 2005-06 school year, Ms. Guerrero said.
