William E. Terry, the chief operating officer of the Harlem School of the Arts, has been named the interim president and chief executive officer of the New York City school.

Mr. Terry, 61, succeeds Camille Akeju, who is resigning to accept a position at the Smithsonian Institution’s Anacostia Museum in Washington. The Harlem school’s board of directors is looking for a permanent replacement for Ms. Akeju.
