U.S. Justice Department to Help Washington District on Race Issues

The U.S. Department of Justice has offered mediation services to a school district in Washington state that has seen three racially tinged incidents this fall.

Stephen Thom, the deputy director of the department’s Community Relations Service, said officials from its Seattle office had met with parents and educators in the 6,300-student Monroe school district and would determine what steps to take next.

A white student from Monroe High School in Snohomish County was expelled last month after allegedly waving a noose at a black student. Local law-enforcement officials are investigating, according to Lou Imbesi, the principal of the school.

In a letter to the Puget Sound-area community last month, Mr. Imbesi asked residents to immediately report such incidents and said the district had formed a coalition of parents, educators, and community members to address the atmosphere at the school.
