Yvette Sanchez Fuentes stepped down last week as the director of the federal Head Start program. Before her appointment in October 2009, the office had gone without a permanent director for two years. A replacement has not been named.
During Ms. Sanchez Fuentes’ tenure, Head Start instituted a policy requiring providers to compete for the first time for federal funds. The first round of competition ended with only a handful of new providers.
Bruce Reed, an assistant to President Barack Obama and the chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden, has been named the first president of the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. Eli Broad will become chairman of the Los Angeles-based philanthropy.
Mr. Reed will oversee the activities and investments of the foundation’s work in public education.
