The ‘Vital Signs’ Of Math and Science

The National Science Foundation has published a compilation of data on math and science education. Single copies of the report are available from the NSF; (703) 306-1070.

Math Standards

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics published curriculum and evaluation standards in 1989 and teaching standards in 1991. But by 1993, math teachers in higher grades were far more likely than their counterparts in lower grades to report being “well aware” of the standards.

Teacher Preparation

In 1993, science and math teachers in the elementary grades reported having fewer undergraduate or graduate degrees in science or math fields than their counterparts in higher grades.
