A gunman shot and killed a female teacher and wounded another last week while educators were preparing for the first day of classes Aug. 30 at Essex Elementary School in Essex Junction, Vt., according to police.
About 40 faculty and staff members were in the building at the time, police said.
Essex police department officials said law-enforcement officers found the body of Mary Shanks, 56, a 2nd grade teacher, in her classroom. A 1st grade teacher, Mary Snedeker, 52, was being treated for a gunshot wound.
The suspect, Christopher A. Williams, 26, was allegedly the ex-boyfriend of a teacher at the school. That teacher was not injured, but police say the gunman apparently killed her mother, Linda Lambesis, 57, off campus.
