A new law requires Arizona public elementary and middle schools to incorporate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SunWise Program into their curricula this fall, making the state the first to require sun-safety education in grades K-8. The program includes basic facts about the dangers and causes of skin cancer, and preventive strategies and behaviors for combating the disease. About 1,500 schools will have to teach the curriculum; more than 650 schools in the state were already participating in the EPA program.
