The following is an excerpt from the draft standards for the information-systems category. The standards are arranged by levels as follows: Level 1 (elementary or K-6), Level 2 (middle school/junior high or grades 6-9), Level 3 (secondary school or grades 9-12), and Level 4 (postsecondary/community college or technical college).

Standard: Students will use various types of operating systems, environments, and utilities.

Level 1-4: Demonstrate knowledge of various types of operating systems, environments, and utilities.

Level 1-4: Demonstrate knowledge of emerging operating-systems technology.

Level 1-4: Demonstrate knowledge of operating-system commands.

Level 3-4: Organize and maintain directories and files using various operating systems.

Level 1-4: Import, export, and merge data stored in different formats.

Level 2-4: Compare and contrast the functions and features of different operating systems, environments, and utilities.

Level 2-4: Select operating systems, environments, and utilities appropriate to specific hardware and software.

Level 3-4: Install and customize operating systems, environments, and utilities.

Level 3-4: Diagnose and repair installation and operational problems of operating systems, environments, and utilities.
