Sharon I. Birdsong, was named the 2006 National Middle School Principal of the Year by MetLife and NASSP.
Ms. Birdsong, 36, the principal of the 807-student Azalea Gardens Middle School in Norfolk, Va., since 2000, was recognized for her efforts to involve parents and the local community in the school. She will receive a $5,000 award.
