Raul H. Yzaguirre announced last week that he would step down later this year as the president and chief executive officer of the National Council of La Raza.
Mr. Yzaguirre, 65, who has led the Hispanic research and advocacy organization since 1974, has been credited with raising the political profile and financial strength of the Washington-based council.
Janet Murguia, 44, who serves as the organization’s executive director and chief operating officer, will succeed Mr. Yzaguirre after he retires Dec. 31.
The council—a private, nonprofit group that works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans—has spearheaded a number of education initiatives.
