The American Association of School Librarians has compiled on a CD-ROM more than 130 documents especially useful to school-library media professionals.

The AASL Electronic Library includes bibliographies, the association’s position statements, articles from School Library Media Annual, and recent research digests on school libraries and technology.

Available in both Macintosh and IBM formats, the CD-ROM costs $45. Discounts are available for AASL and American Library Association members. Information is available by telephone at (800) 545-2433.

Scientific American recently announced the creation of a new award to recognize books that successfully communicate scientific or technical topics to young readers.

The magazine’s longtime book reviewers, Philip and Phylis Morrison, chose the 25 winners of the first award. They span the K-12 audience, and will be listed in the December issue, which will be available at newsstands Nov. 22.

A 14-year-old from Ellsworth, Maine, has illustrated a children’s picture book that celebrates the beauty of flowers.

Using intense colors and bold strokes, Cara Raymaker conveys the vibrancy and healing powers of nature in Glory! To the Flowers: A Celebration.

“When other kids hear about my part in this book, I hope they become more open to possibilities in their own lives,” said the young illustrator. “I’d like to tell them to be totally fearless and true to themselves doing what they love to do.”

The $10 paperback is available from Heartsong Books, P.O. Box 370, Blue Hill, Maine 04614-0370.

In the fall issue of the Hungry Mind Review, 14 nationally acclaimed writers recommend to teenagers books that influenced them as young adults.

John Updike suggests The White Deer by James Thurber, Joyce Carol Oates makes a plug for Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, and Michael Dorris fondly recalls Exodus by Leon Uris and Hawaii by James Michener.

Single copies of the review cost $4 and can be ordered by phone at (612) 699-2610.

The National Foundation for the Improvement of Education has what it describes as “the perfect $10 teacher gift"--boxes of full-color, 5x7 notecards featuring award-winning children’s drawings.

Information on the “Images for Teachers” series is available at (203) 934-2669.
