A new imprint debuts this month featuring publications that offer parents and educators practical advice and tips to help children succeed in school.
Developed by D.C. Heath & Company, the Whole Village imprint will also publish books offering educators strategies for involving parents, community members, and business leaders in the education process.
The imprint’s first titles, eight easy-to-read books that make up the Helping Your Child... series, are designed for parents of children from preschool through grade 5. The books explain how to prepare children for school and how to reinforce what they learn there.
Some of the topics featured include helping children learn how to read, how to be healthy and fit, and how to use the library.
Originally created by the U.S. Education Department in support of the national education goals, the books have been repackaged in colorful, low-cost sets.
In partnership with several national organizations, the publisher is developing five other imprint components which will focus on family-involvement issues, such as adult literacy. These publications will be available later this fall.

The editors of a new interdisciplinary journal hope to cultivate the idea that all children deserve a safe, nurturing learning environment.
The Journal for a Just and Caring Education will provide a forum for educators and experts on school law, administration, and social issues to discuss ways of transforming schools into “sanctuaries” where children can succeed academically, emotionally, and socially.
The first issue will be published in January.

Academic Therapy Publications of Novato, Calif., recently announced two new book series written specifically for teenagers and young adults with reading disabilities.
The novels feature adult characters and entertaining plots that the editors say are designed to encourage the reader to finish the book.
The Riddle Street Mystery Series novels revolve around Brad, a photographer, and Meg, a reporter, who encounter different mysteries while working for the town newspaper.
