Kathleen D. Zwiebel has been named the 1998 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, a Princeton, N.J.-based nonprofit organization created to promote journalism careers to students. The 50-year-old educator has taught at Pottsville (Pa.) Area High School for 19 years. She is the adviser for the high school’s yearbook and newspaper and also produces the district’s newsletter. In addition to a plaque, Ms. Zwiebel received $1,000 to present to a student at her school as a college scholarship to study journalism.

Florence McGinn has won Technology and Learning magazine’s 1998 Teacher of the Year Award, sponsored by Microsoft Corp. Ms. McGinn, an English/language arts teacher for more than 20 years, is currently teaching at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Flemington, N.J. She created Electric Soup, an on-line magazine run by students that was awarded the New Jersey Best Education Practices Award from the state education department in 1996. She also helped form one of the first chapters of the American Technology Honor Society, a branch of the National Honor Society.
Stanford Loveman is the new executive director of the Ohio Mathematics and Science Coalition, an independent, nonprofit group in Cleveland formed to improve math and science education in the state. The 31-year-old co-founded GlobaLearn, a nonprofit, technology-based education organization in Boston, then taught English in Japan for four years. In his new position, Mr. Loveman will be responsible for fostering a partnership among state, regional, and local math and science initiatives.
Betsi Shays has been named the director of the Peace Corps World Wise Schools program, which introduces students to cultures around the world through the experiences of volunteers who have served with the independent federal agency. Ms. Shays, a former Peace Corps volunteer herself, has 27 years of teaching experience in grades 1-10 in both public and private schools. Most recently, she taught 7th grade social studies at Saxe Middle School in New Haven, Conn.
