Michael LeFlore was named the Afterschool Hero of the Year last week by the Afterschool Alliance and American Isuzu Motors Inc.
Former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley made the announcement at the Department of Education in Washington. Mr. LeFlore, 46, was honored for his work as the director of the K-8 afterschool program impact, or I Motivate People And Community Together, at the Omega Academy charter school in Phoenix. He will receive a $5,000 grant for his program and a new Isuzu Axiom car and a personal computer for himself.
Kathleen N. Strauss has been elected president of the Michigan state board of education.

Board members chose the president and other officers during their meeting Jan. 10. Ms. Strauss, 77, has served as a board member for eight years, and was elected to another eight-year term last year.
This month, Sandra Priest Rose became the chairwoman of the board of the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education. The institute, based in New York City, emphasizes the importance of arts education in the nation’s schools.
The National Education Goals Panel named Emily O. Wurtz its acting executive director last month after Ken Nelson, the former executive director, announced his retirement.
Ms. Wurtz, 60, was most recently a senior education associate with the panel, which is based in Washington. The panel assesses and reports on progress made toward achieving national education goals.
