The Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University, awarded TV host and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey with its 2009 Leadership Award.

The Klingenstein Award acknowledges a person who has positively influenced school administrators, teachers, parents, or students at independent schools.

Ms. Winfrey was selected for creating the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls – South Africa, an independent school for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds. She was also recognized for her philanthropy through organizations, programs, and scholarships she founded and for her promotion of reading through Oprah’s Book Club.

To honor Ms. Winfrey’s commitment to leadership, the Klingenstein Center will travel to South Africa and conduct workshops with the faculty of the Leadership Academy for Girls.
