Noting the Impact of the Spoken Word

To the Editor:

Thank you for the article on slam poetry (“Outsiders’Art,” On Assignment May 18, 2005.). As the former director (and founder) of Urban Word NYC, and as a Ph.D. candidate in urban education at the City University of New York, I was pleased to see a serious article addressing the real educational impact of spoken word.

I also was pleased by the article’s mention of Urban Word, and hope you will add it to your list of resources. Readers interested in this subject may find our Web site helpful (www.urbanwordnyc.org).
