New Mich. Gun Law Means Automatic Expulsion
A new Michigan law taking effect this month requires that students carrying guns on school grounds be automatically expelled.
Gov. John Engler said the law, which does not establish alternative schooling for gun-toting students, was necessary to protect law-abiding students and teachers.
Under the law, prosecution or conviction is not necessary to impose the expulsion, which also applies to students committing rape or arson at school.
Students who are expelled can request a hearing to be readmitted, but cannot attend school in the meantime.
An aide to Mr. Engler said the law was meant to focus attention on children and adults who feel vulnerable at school.
“We’ll worry about the lawbreakers later,” the spokesman said.
