Washington--Secretary of Education Lauro F. Cavazos was scheduled to make his first appearance before a major education group last weekend in San Diego, where he was to address a National Education Association conference on education and the economy.
Mr. Cavazos’ spokesman, Mahlon Anderson, said he would discuss the Bush Administration’s education agenda, the federal education budget, and enhancing teacher professionalism.
The Secretary began making overtures to the education community shortly after his confirmation. In contrast, his predecessor, William J. Bennett, devoted much of his tenure to attacking the education groups, which he said were blocking reforms.
Mr. Bennett had addressed the nea early in his term, and said he was never invited back.--jm
