New Detroit H.S. Football Field Closed Over Safety Concerns

The football stadium at Detroit’s brand-new Cass Technical High School campus is closed after hosting just one game this season.

The Detroit public school officials who oversee athletics shuttered the stadium after concerns were raised about the distance between the playing field and a chain-link fence surrounding it. Unlike most football fields, it was built without a surrounding track.

But operations officials with the 143,000-student district said the field was built to national standards, which call for 15 feet between the field and the fence, district spokesman Lekan Oguntoyinbo said this month.

The district has asked a structural engineer to investigate concerns that bleachers at the new field were unstable, although an initial investigation found no evidence of safety hazards, Mr. Oguntoyinbo said.

“We don’t know when it’s going to reopen, but we’re taking every step to make sure it reopens soon,” Mr. Oguntoyinbo said.
