Sport-Reform Group Backs Plan to Overhaul NCAA

A prominent group in the push for reform of college sports, including the adoption of tougher academic standards for student athletes, has formally endorsed the proposed reorganization of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics said this month that it approved of the plan that would give college presidents more control of their sports programs.

The plan would also give more autonomy to the three divisions of the NCAA. Under the proposal, a council of 16 college presidents would head each division and have the authority to make rules.

Members of the NCAA will vote on the proposal in January at the group’s annual convention.
