Mary Ellen Freeley is the new president of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She was elected to serve a one-year term that began last week.

Ms. Freeley, 58, is the superintendent of the 1,650-student Malverne Union Free School District in Malverne, N.Y. She is also the former superintendent of the 1,500-student Carle Place Union Free School District and the 3,000-student Glen Cove City School District, both in New York.
The Alexandria, Va.-based ASCD is a professional-development organization for educators that has about 170,000 members from 135 countries.
Charles Barone has been hired by the Citizens’ Commission on Civil Rights as its project director for the No Child Left Behind Act and education reform.
