Jim Nelson has been selected as the executive director of Advancement Via Individual Determination, or avid, the San Diego-based secondary school program that prepares underachieving, mostly minority students for college. Mr. Nelson, 56, is currently the superintendent of the 35,500-student Richardson Independent School District in Texas.
