Education Pioneers, a nonprofit group based in San Jose, Calif., that recruits top graduate students into summer internships in education organizations, has received a $1.2 million grant that will enable it to triple its program.

The support from the Los Angeles-based Broad Foundation will enable the national program, which operates in Boston, New York City, and the San Francisco Bay Area, to expand into additional cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington.

The 10-week, full-time internships offered in the fellows program are open to graduate-level students in business, law, public policy, and education. They are trained and placed in urban school districts, charter-management organizations, and educational nonprofit groups. Three out of four Education Pioneers alumni continue to work full time in education after completing their graduate studies, according to a news release issued last week by Education Pioneers and the foundation.

Last year, 365 applicants—one-third of whom were from Harvard University, Stanford University, and the University of California, Berkeley—applied for 62 spots.
