“Homeschooling in the United States: 2003" is available from the National Center for Education Statistics.

The number of home schoolers in the United States increased from 850,000 students to 1.1 million students, or by 29 percent, between 1999 and 2003, concludes a report by the National Center for Education Statistics.

The updated figure for 2003 represents 2.2 percent of all school-age children in the United States. In 1999, an estimated 1.7 percent of school-age children were taught at home. The report also found that 2.7 percent of white children were home-schooled in 2003, compared with 1.3 percent of African-American children and 0.7 percent of Hispanic children.
