Texas education officials have given schools five more years for students to meet more rigorous standards before entering high school.

According to the Texas Education Agency, in a report released last month, had the 2014 students needed to meet the top standards, more than half would have failed every one of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. The results would have been more extreme for black and Hispanic students.

The agency pushed back the deadline from 2016 to 2021, meaning today’s 1st graders won’t be subject to the new exams until reaching 8th grade.
