The New York City teachers’ union has cleared a hurdle to opening its own charter school this fall, but the high-profile plan is not a done deal.

A subcommittee of trustees at the State University of New York on June 9 approved a charter application submitted by the United Federation of Teachers, despite continuing objections from some members of the panel. A vote by the full board of trustees had not been set late last week, but was expected to occur next month.

The move came after the union agreed to make its president, Randi Weingarten, a member of the proposed charter school’s board of directors. Some SUNY subcommittee members had insisted on the change to make the union chief accountable for the school’s performance.
