The National Governors Association announced last week that it will work with the Carnegie Corporation of New York to award up to $400,000 in grants to help states improve adolescent literacy.

The Washington-based association is inviting governors’ offices to apply for competitive grants of up to $50,000 each for as many as eight states. Applications are due by Jan. 11.

The NGA Center for Best Practices announced its plans as part of a new initiative called Reading to Achieve.

“States must focus on adolescent-literacy education to ensure students graduate from high school prepared for college and the workforce,” John Thomasian, the director of the NGA Center for Best Practices, said in a statement.

The center also released its adolescent-literacy advisory panel’s guidebook on the subject, “Reading to Achieve: A Governor’s Guide to Adolescent Literacy,” which is available from the Natioanal Governor’s Association.
