Joseph E. Brown, Georgia’s governor during the Civil War, won’t have a high school in Cherokee County named for him after all.

The school board for the 31,000-student Cherokee County, Ga., district, north of Atlanta, voted Jan. 28 to reverse its earlier decision to name the new school after Brown, who was a lawyer in the county.

Board members had received numerous complaints from parents and students who were opposed to the prospect of having a school named for someone who was a secessionist.

The task of naming the new school, which is under construction and is set to open next school year, has now been sent back to the board’s school naming committee.

One suggestion has been to name the school Creekland High, because it is located across the street from Creekland Middle School.
