Following is a list of the winners of grants over five years to operate the Education Department’s network of educational research and development centers. Included are descriptions of each of the centers’ missions and the amounts of their grants.
Center on Teacher Education: College of Education, Michigan State University
Mission: Study the knowledge and skills that teachers need and the ways in which these are acquired and demonstrated.
Grant Amount: $6 million
Center on Student Testing, Evaluation, and Standards: Center for the Study of Evaluation, University of California-Los Angeles
Mission: Develop more effective, efficient, and fair methods of testing and evaluation in schools and thereby contribute to the raising of educational standards and student performance levels.
Grant Amount: $5 million
Center for the Study of Writing: School of Education, University of California-Berkeley
Mission: Conduct research on effective writing and how teachers can be trained to show their students how to communicate skillfully using the written word.
Grant Amount: $4 million
Center for the Study of Learning: Research and Development Center, University of Pittsburgh
Mission: Examine the acquisition of cognitive skills and knowledge by students.
Grant Amount: $6.5 million
Center on Effective Elementary Schools: Education R&D Center, Johns Hopkins University
Mission: Study the factors that contribute to excellence in elementary and middle schools.
Grant Amount: $5.5 million
Center on Effective Secondary Schools: Wisconsin Center for Education Research, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Mission: Study the factors that contribute to excellence in secondary schools.
Grant Amount: $5.5 million
Center on Education and Employment: Teachers College, Columbia University
Mission: Examine the relationships of education to employment, economic growth, and productivity.
Grant Amount: $4 million
Center on Postsecondary Management and Governance: Institute for Research in Higher and Adult Education, University of Maryland
Mission: Study how colleges and universities can be governed, led, and managed more effectively and financed more efficiently.
Grant Amount: $6.5 million
Center on Postsecondary Teaching and Learning: School of Education, University of Michigan
Mission: Investigate learning, methods of instruction, and effective approaches to assessing student outcomes in higher education.
Grant Amount: $5 million
Center on State and Local Policy Development and Leadership in Education: The Eagleton Institute of Politics, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
Mission: Conduct research and provide information to state and local leaders on effective means of governing, financing, planning, and administering the American educational enterprise.
Grant Amount: $6.5 million
Center on Teacher Quality and Effectiveness: No grant awarded
Mission: Under re-examination.
Grant Amount: About $4 million
Center on Educational Technology: Graduate School of Education, Harvard University
Mission: Determine how emerging technologies can be used to improve science, mathematics, and computer education.
Grant Amount: $7.6 million
The Harvard center was funded by the Education Department in 1984.
