Oct. 1--Ballet scholarship: Entries are due for the Thelma A. Robinson Scholarship in Ballet competition, sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs. Dancers between the ages of 13 and 16 who are serious students of ballet and have intentions of pursuing professional dance careers are eligible to submit videocassettes of their repertoires along with recommendations of professional promise by the deans or directors of their schools. One winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship to be used to further education in ballet. July 27--Early-childhood education: The U.S. Education Department is inviting applications for new awards under its Training in Early-Childhood Education and Violence Counseling Program, to establish innovative programs to recruit and train students for careers in: early-childhood development and care or preschool programs; or providing counseling to young children from birth to 6 years old who have been affected by violence, and to adults who work with such children. Aug. 1--High schools: Applications are due for mini-grants from the University of Maryland’s Center for Political Leadership and Participation. High school groups and individuals are eligible to apply for mini-grants ranging from $50-$1,000, to address problems that concern students and to provide solutions. Aug. 8--Critical-language studies: The U.S. Education Department is inviting applications for new awards under its Demonstration Grants for Critical Language and Area Studies Program, to provide demonstration grants to eligible consortia to operate critical-language and area-studies programs, develop and acquire educational equipment and materials, and develop teacher training programs, texts, curricula, and other activities. One to three awards of an estimated $300,000 to $1 million each will be awarded to consortia consisting of at least four schools. Sept. 1--Golf scholarships: Applications are due for the Chrysler Junior Golf Scholarship Program. Oct. 31--Foreign-language teaching: Applications are due for the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Fellow Program for Foreign-Language Teachers. Foreign-language teachers of grades K-12 who have spent at least three years full-time teaching prior to the fellowship summer are eligible to apply. Recipients receive a $3,750 stipend for six weeks study abroad, to improve their linguistic and cultural proficiency. Dec. 22--Education research: Applications are due for the Spencer Post-Doctoral Fellowships, sponsored by the National Academy of Education. Individuals who have received a doctorate or equivalent degree between January 1, 1989 and December 31, 1994 in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, or education, are eligible to submit a research proposal that is directly relevant to education. Jan. 15, 1995--Gifted students: Applications are due for the 1995 International Hollingworth Award Competition. March 1--History: Applications are due for the James Madison Memorial Fellowship. In-service secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies in grades 7-12 and graduating or graduated collegians who wish to become secondary school teachers are eligible to apply. At least one fellowship is awarded annually through nationwide competition to a recipient in each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and, taken together, the other U.S. territories. Fellows receive $24,000 to cover tuition, fees, books, room, and board associated with study leading to master’s degrees in American history, political science, or education, with concentration in the framing, principles, and history of the U.S. Constitution.
