- Oct. 1--Ballet scholarship: Entries are due for the Thelma A. Robinson Scholarship in Ballet competition, sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs. Dancers between the ages of 13 and 16 who are serious students of ballet and have intentions of pursuing professional dance careers are eligible to submit videocassettes of their repertoires along with recommendations of professional promise by the deans or directors of their schools. One winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship to be used to further education in ballet. - July 27--Early-childhood education: The U.S. Education Department is inviting applications for new awards under its Training in Early-Childhood Education and Violence Counseling Program, to establish innovative programs to recruit and train students for careers in: early-childhood development and care or preschool programs; or providing counseling to young children from birth to 6 years old who have been affected by violence, and to adults who work with such children. An estimated 12 awards of $750,000 each will be awarded to institutions of higher education.
