School is the most stressful factor in many children’s lives, a survey concludes.

A summary of “KidsHealth KidsPoll on How Kids Handle Stress” is posted by the National Association of Health Education Centers.

According to the survey of 875 9- to 13-year-olds, 36 percent of students reported feeling upset or stressed out by grades, school, and homework, the highest percentage of any category of response. The second and third most common stressors cited were family problems, 32 percent; and issues with friends or peers, 21 percent.

The Milwaukee-based National Association of Health Education Centers, the Jacksonville, Fla.-based Nemours Center for Children’s Health Media, and the Department of Health Education and Recreation at Southern Illinois University Carbondale conducted the survey.
