Charter schools are falling behind on implementing special education programs, a situation that could jeopardize the education of students with disabilities in such schools, a report says.
The report—produced by the Alexandria, Va.-based National Association of State Directors of Special Education—says that in many charter schools, special education is falling behind because of inadequate information on how to implement programs, and a lack of the technical assistance needed to do so. It recommends that charter schools consider outlining special education programs and policies before opening, and to determine early how special education funding works.
