Anti-Drug Education

The House last week approved by voice vote legislation to reauthorize anti-drug education programs aimed at members of youth gangs, runaways, and homeless children.

Civil Rights Commission
HR 3350
The House last week approved by voice vote legislation that would reauthorize the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights for two years and also reduce the panel’s budget.

Higher Education Act
HR 2627
The House Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education last week approved legislation to reauthorize the Higher Education Act.

National Children’s Day
Hearing
The House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families marked National Children’s Day last week with a hearing on the condition of America’s children.

Occupational Skills
The Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee last week held a hearing on a new bill to encourage occupational training for students and workers.

Unemployment Benefits

The Congress last week gave final approval to a bill that would extend benefits to unemployed workers by as many as 20 weeks over the current 26 weeks of benefits. The House passed the bill with more than enough votes to override a threatened Presidential veto, but the 65-35 margin in the Senate fell two votes short.

Student Loan Defaults
Final Rules
The Education Department, in the Sept. 26 Federal Register, published final regulations implementing its student-loan default-reduction initiative.

Juvenile Justice
Annual Plan
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, in the Sept. 26 Federal Register announced plans for new programs in 1992 that will focus on restitution for crimes, drunk driving, sex offenders, training for youth workers, and correctional education.
