A school bus collided with a trash truck in Arlington, Va., last week, killing one student immediately and injuring 13, one of whom died two days later.

The April 18 accident involved a bus taking students to Hoffman-Boston Elementary School. As the bus was turning left at an intersection, it collided with the trash truck, which was headed in the opposite direction.

An 11-year-old remained hospitalized in critical condition last week. Lilibeth Gomez, 9, was killed in the crash; Harrison Orosco, 7, died on April 20. Both drivers were hospitalized in critical condition.

The 37-year-old bus driver has worked for the school district since 1994 and had a clean driving record, said Linda M. Erdos, a spokeswoman for the 18,500-student Arlington public schools.

The National Transportation Safety Board, local authorities, and the Virginia State Police are investigating.

An average of 22 school-age children die in traffic accidents related to school transportation each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of those, six are vehicle occupants and 16 are pedestrians.
