“Raw Deal: School Beverage Contracts Less Lucrative Than They Seem” is available from the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Most school beverage deals aren’t very profitable for schools, raising an average of only $18 per student per year, according to estimates from a multistate analysis of districts’ contracts with beverage companies.

The analysis—conducted by the Washington-based Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Boston-based Public Health Advocacy Institute—looked at 120 beverage contracts in 16 states. Among other findings, the report says that 67 percent of the revenue collected from drink sales goes to beverage companies, not schools.
