Arthur J. Kropp, 37, the president of People for the American Way, has died.

The head of the civil-liberties advocacy group died June 12 in his Washington home of AIDS, the organization said in a statement.

Mr. Kropp joined People for the American Way in 1984 and was appointed its president in 1987. Under his direction, membership in the Washington-based group swelled to about 300,000.

He also expanded the organization’s lobbying and research programs as it branched out into new activities and issues--including education.

In recent years, the group has closely monitored such education-related issues as prayer and censorship in public schools.
