Arlene Ackerman, 58, is now the chairwoman of the Council of the Great City Schools’ board of directors. Ms. Ackerman, the superintendent of the 58,000-student San Francisco Unified School District, began her one-year term July 1. She succeeded Judy Farmer, a school board member in the 40,650-student Minneapolis district.
The Council of the Great City Schools, based in Washington, is a national policy and research organization in urban education that represents 65 urban public school districts.
