Three of the terminals were operated by software programs:
Terminal 7, Liberal or Conservative, by Joseph Weintraub of Thinking Software. This program was judged to be most human-like, garnering Weintraub his third consecutive $2,000 prize.
Terminal 3, Bad Marriage, by Malibu Artifactual Intelligence Works. Placed second among the computers.
Terminal 8, Pets, by Michael Mauldin of CarnegieMellon University.
The other five terminals were operated by human beings. Terminals 1 (Abortion) and 5 (Martial Arts) were mistaken by judges to be software programs. One judge rated the winning software program at Terminal 7 to be more human than the people operating terminals 1 and 5.
