Setting the tone for this year’s American Education Week, Secretary of Education Lauro F. Cavazos has issued a national challenge to “educate every child to his or her fullest potential.”

The theme of the annual event, commemorated this year from Nov. 13 to 19, is “America’s Schools: Invest in Your Future.”

“We must begin now to prepare our children for the challenges of the 21st century,” Mr. Cavazos said last week in statement that called for increased community participation in education. “It is not a task that the schools can do alone.”

He added that “too many of our young people--especially black and Hispanic students--suffer an education deficit and, as a result, their ability to compete will be seriously impaired.”

In one of several events scheduled for the week, Mr. Cavazos will join on Nov. 17 representatives of the Outdoor Advertising Association, the Printing Industries of America, and the U.S. Government Printing Office to announce the donation by o.a.a.a. members of space on 10,000 billboards nationwide over the next two years to convey this message: ''Erase Illiteracy--Read.”

President Reagan, in a nationwide satellite broadcast, will reflect on his Presidency, America, and his vision of the future for an audience of 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. The broadcast also will include a question-and-answer session with the students.

The program is scheduled to air Nov. 16 at 9:30 A.M. and Nov. 21 at noon (EST). The broadcasts may be taped for viewing later.

Information on how to receive the broadcast is available by calling the White House office of media and broadcast relations at (202) 456-7730 or the Education Department at (202) 732-5404.
