Susan Gendron, Maine's commissioner of education, is stepping down at the end of the month to become the policy director for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. Ms. Gendron, who led a move to consolidate the states school districts, is also just finishing a term as president of the Council of Chief State School Officers, which is co-leading the initiative to design common standards.
