Report Roundup
Immigrant Population
Immigrants made up 12.4 percent of the U.S. population in 2005, up from 11.1 percent in 2000, according to a survey by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Of the nearly 36 million immigrants nationwide, more than half, 53 percent, are from Latin America. The survey also found that 58 percent of the nation’s immigrants were not U.S. citizens, but it did not distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants.
The annual survey of households does not include the populations of college campuses, prisons, or nursing homes.
